Action Plan
Over the past ten years, Walnut Way has made remarkable strides. Utilizing our strategies of civic engagement, environmental stewardship, and economic enterprise, tremendous change has occurred:
- Lindsay Heights residents and stakeholders gathered in 2009 to create a Quality of Life Plan
- A property slated for demolition was converted into a beautiful and active Neighborhood Center
- 40 rain gardens were installed in the area to manage storm water and beautify the neighborhood
- Vacant lots are now used as intensive urban agriculture sites, producing local food
- Residents gather regularly to discuss action plans
- Local youth are engaged in safe, educational programming in a familiar neighborhood setting
- Neighborhood families gather to connect and learn about sufficiency strategies
- Annual events help neighbors to celebrate accomplishments and connect with the greater Milwaukee community
- Partnerships with public agencies, private businesses, and nonprofits have blossomed
- Neighborhood Based Environmental Project Sites have brought demonstration projects to neighbors and guests
In the coming years, Walnut Way seeks to expand and enhance our successful revitalization strategies. Examples of our future activities include:
- Construction of Agricultural Center to enhance learning and improve garden product processing and production
- Community Investment Groups to research local investment strategies and build community wealth
- Offering neighborhood-based educational programs for K-12 students alligned with DPI standards
