WALNUT WAY PART-TIME ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION & AGRICULTURE INTERN (EEA Intern)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: Walnut Way Environmental Education Coordinator

ORGANIZATION: Walnut Way Conservation Corp. (Walnut Way) is a neighborhood association with a mission to sustain economically diverse and abundant communities through civic engagement, environmental stewardship and creating venues for prosperity. Walnut Way is the lead agency for the Lindsay Heights Neighborhood Initiative that aims to support the design and implementation of a comprehensive neighborhood driven quality-of-life plan.

LIMITED TERM POSITION: May-September

COMPENSATION: Unpaid, Willing to work with student for course credit.

AREA OF FOCUS: Environmental Education & Urban Agriculture

TIME COMMITMENT: 20-30 hours per week.

POSITION SUMMARY: Walnut Way is seeking a part-time Environmental Education & Agriculture Intern (EEA) to assist with the Environmental Education Program & Urban Agriculture production in our Central City Milwaukee neighborhood-based campus. Walnut Way operates sub acre production gardens and orchards, teaching gardens, and educational programs. The EEA Intern is responsible for assisting in all educational programming including 4H Club, Gardens to Market (G2M) Teen Internship Program, and Environmental Education Programs. The EEA intern will also assist in farming operations as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach hands-on Environmental Education lessons to visiting schools and youth programs held at the Walnut Way farm & classroom.

o Prepare for school visits by setting up materials & reviewing lesson plans

o Document school visits with camera

o Track group visits and assessment in computer database

o Create lesson plans as needed to align with school needs

o Maintain educational supplies

o Clean and maintain learning room area

o Assist with weekly 4-H programming

o Assist as needed with G2M teen internship program

Farming: Assist with day-to-day growing operations in our urban Milwaukee neighborhood-based campus.

Attend farmers markets and other events to sell garden products and promote organization as needed

Assist with Walnut Way and Lindsay Heights events Other related duties as assigned

SKILLS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

 The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of teaching environmental education or related.

 College level coursework or equivalent in teaching, environmental studies, or related preferred.

 Experience supervising volunteers and working with diverse communities.

 Experience teaching youth and/or adults in a farm or garden setting.

 Interest and familiarity with issues relating to local food, food access, and sustainable agriculture, and a genuine appreciation of the urban environment.

 Strong organizational and written/verbal communication skills.

 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

 Proficiency in all MS office applications required.
