Jeff knew he wanted to work with his hands. He came from a family of builders. He couldn’t see his dream or realize his vision because he was isolated, unemployed, and nearly homeless. In the Lindsay Heights community, a common barrier for men seeking long-term employment is a lack of social support. When Jeff joined the Men’s Wellness Group at Walnut Way, it was his first step towards becoming well. Through the course of two years, Jeff engaged in programs at Walnut Way that focus on supporting community members through the building blocks of Wellness, Work, and Wealth.
Angela Smith has a deep commitment to wellness – physical, emotional, and spiritual that stems from a journey towards being her better self. Looking for alternative ways to ease her back pain, Angela found an alternative health clinic that made a wellness plan. It included a prescription of herbs from a Chinese Medicine doctor, massage therapy, reiki and acupuncture. She was really excited with the results and the new methods she learned to strengthen her body and reduce pain.
Jeff didn’t know a knock on his door in the fall of 2014 would be a “game changer” as he calls it. He was down on his luck, depressed, staying at a family member’s home that was almost condemned. Unemployed and still recovering emotionally from a recent stint in jail, life was bleak. But then two men from Walnut Way – Terron Edwards and Maanaan Sabir – knocked on his door, introduced themselves, and invited him to the next Men’s Wellness Peer Group.

There is an African Philosophy called Umbuntu that means “I am because we are… a person is a person through other people”. The philosophy of Umbuntu has intrigued me since I learned about it. I have gradually embraced the principles of collectivism, personal responsibility, modeling and community since earlier in my adulthood, but I never heard these principles summarized in such a beautiful concise way! These principles have always been at the heart of my work with men, boys and community and I attempt to create spaces where these ideas are able to have a home.
