Understanding Energy Burden:Â Energy burden refers to the percentage of household income spent on energy costs. For low-middle income communities in Milwaukee, this burden is disproportionately high due to a combination of factors such as inefficient housing, high energy prices, and lower incomes. Energy burden can lead to tough decisions about whether to pay for necessities like heating or groceries, leading to what's known as 'heat or eat' dilemmas.
Walnut Way's Role:Â Walnut Way Conservation Corp has been steadfast in its advocacy for fair energy practices. As an intervener in rate cases, Walnut Way challenges utilities seeking to increase rates, arguing that these hikes disproportionately affect low-income communities. These interventions have led to important discussions about energy equity and affordability.
The Renewables Challenge:Â Transitioning to renewable energy sources is a crucial step towards sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. However, it presents challenges including upfront costs, regulatory barriers, and technological hurdles. Despite these challenges, renewable energy can help alleviate the energy burden by providing cheaper, cleaner energy options in the long run.
Strategies for Affordability:Â Several strategies can improve energy affordability. One potential strategy is transitioning from We Energies to a municipal utility, which could provide more local control over energy decisions. Other strategies include investing in energy efficiency measures, implementing tiered pricing structures, and advocating for policy changes at the state and federal level.
