    < Back Housing Walnut Way's commitment is reflected in their active participation in various initiatives aimed at housing stabilization across the city of Milwaukee. One such initiative is the MKE Homes Program, a city-wide project that repurposes city-owned foreclosed properties into affordable homeownership opportunities. Walnut Way partners with this program to revitalize vacant properties into quality homes, making them accessible to individuals and families with moderate to low income. In addition to this, Walnut Way plays an essential role within the Neighborhood Improvement District (NID). Through this involvement, they facilitate minor and sometimes significant repairs to homes, thereby enhancing their safety and livability. This support enables seniors to age in place, maintain their independence and remain connected to their community. Walnut Way also collaborates with the Milwaukee Community Land Trust to increase the availability of affordable homes in Lindsay Heights and throughout Milwaukee. This partnership provides an innovative pathway to homeownership by separating the cost of land from the price of the home, making it more attainable for those with limited financial resources.     < Back Samuel Thurman Construction Development Samuel Thurman is Walnut Way’s General Contractor and Campus Maintenance Supervisor, as well as founder of Building Enthusiasm in Educational & Construction Services, Inc. With over 30 years of gardening experience and a Master Gardener Certification in Southeastern Wisconsin, Samuel brings expertise in both land cultivation and sustainable construction. He has played a key role in neighborhood revitalization and building projects at Walnut Way and previously served as Volunteer Coordinator at Mercy Memorial Baptist Church, managing daily meal preparation for over 100 children. Samuel holds a PhD from Grace Christian College, is a State Licensed Mental Health & Substance Abuse Counselor, and is certified in Advanced Child and Youth Care and Case Management from UW–Milwaukee. He is also licensed by the City of Milwaukee for development and contracting work. The Media Narrative Curator will be responsible for crafting compelling stories, managing media relationships, and utilizing various channels to influence public perception and drive advocacy efforts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in media, communications, and social justice, with a deep understanding of environmental issues and community engagement. Finally, this position is responsible for sharing compelling narratives that highlight the experiences and voices of the Lindsay Heights community, and showcase Walnut Way’s work, impact and aligns with the general Walnut Way narrative. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Content Creation & Strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive media narrative strategy that aligns with the organization’s mission and goals. Create, curate, and manage engaging content across various media platforms, including social media, blogs, newsletters, and press releases. Collaborate with team members to generate content that reflects diverse perspectives and addresses key environmental justice issues. Monitor media coverage, social media trends, and public discourse related to environmental justice and the organization’s initiatives. Analyze the effectiveness of media campaigns and narrative strategies, providing regular reports and recommendations for improvement. Other duties as assigned. Storytelling : Craft and share compelling narratives that highlight the experiences and voices of the Lindsay Heights community, and showcase Walnut Way’s work, impact and aligns with the general Walnut Way narrative. Community Engagement: Engage with community members, activists, and stakeholders to gather stories, insights, and feedback for content development.     < Back WPSC Wifi Network Expansion Walnut Way Conservation Corp is spearheading an ambitious initiative to establish a community-driven Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) in Milwaukee's Lindsay Heights neighborhood. The project aims to bridge the digital divide by providing free public Wi-Fi access throughout targeted areas, with affordable options for residents to boost in-home signal strength. Public Wi-Fi Infrastructure The project will deploy a high-speed wireless network using 60GHz technology, establishing Wi-Fi access points in strategic locations throughout the community. This infrastructure will provide a base level of free internet access to all residents within range, targeting a speed of 100/20 Mbps for the free tier. In-Home Signal Boosting Residents will have the option to purchase Wi-Fi (WISP Routers) with VPN functionality and extenders, with baseline pricing starting from $20-$30. These devices will allow residents to amplify the free public Wi-Fi signal within their homes, improving connectivity and creating a more robust network experience. Initial User Base and Scalability The project targets an initial 3,500 subscribers, including: 1,750 individual homes with in-home booster devices 1,750 users in Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs) The network is designed to scale up to 17,000 users and beyond when complete, with plans to expand from Milwaukee's Near Northside to the Northwest side. Digital Navigator Program A crucial component of the project is the hiring and training of community members as Digital Navigators. These individuals will provide: Support for device setup Troubleshooting (routers / VPN) Digital literacy training This ensures that residents can fully utilize the new digital resources and maximizes the impact of the network deployment.
